Burns showing his coverage skills this spring
Is Arlington (Texas) Martin defender Devonta Burns a linebacker or a safety at the next level?
That was the question college recruiters were asking themselves last season about the 6-foot, 200-pound Burns. He started at strong safety in Martin's 4-2-5 defense and the position resembles a linebacker sometimes as much as it does that of a safety. In addition, Burns actually started two games last season at linebacker when teammate Deryck Gildon was injured.
The questions continued for some schools into 2010 as they wanted to see Burns in spring practice playing deep coverages before they made up their minds. One of the programs that made up their minds early on was Texas A&M, which offered him as a safety in March and then saw him commit to them at their spring game the next month. As a result, the Aggies' confidence in Burns has made it a matter of too little, too late for some of the programs hoping to get his attention.
