Video: Treadwell pleased with status quo win
EAST LANSING - Michigan State offensive coordinator Don Treadwell told anyone he spoke with during the week leading up to the Spartans' non-conference finale with Northern Colorado that the Spartans would be approaching their first game without Mark Dantonio as if it was business as usual for the Spartan football program.
And after the No. 25 ranked Spartans put down Division 1-AA Northern Colorado, 45-7, at Spartan Stadium Saturday, Treadwell said that the everything had gone the way it would have had Dantonio been on the sidelines and not at home recovering from the mild heart attack he suffered after Michigan State's dramatic overtime victory over Notre Dame.
"I don't know if I should use the word peace or not," Treadwell said, "to be able to not get too on edge from start to finish as we played the game that we did today. We are certainly pleased that our young men were able to go into this game and be focused and execute early on."
Offensively, Michigan State remained status quo. The Spartans rushed for more than 200 yards for the fourth consecutive week. Michigan State rushed 37 times for 201 yards with 4 touchdowns.
Freshman Le'Veon Bell led the way with 92 yards on 11 carries. Bell scored a career high three rushing touchdowns in the win. Edwin Baker carried the ball 11 times for 59 yards with one touchdown. Larry Caper carried the ball nine times for 38 yards.
Spartan quarterback Kirk Cousins had time to throw and completed a good percentage of his pass attempts. The junior captain was 16-of-20 through the air for 290 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.
Defensively, Michigan State won the turnover battle. The Spartans picked off Northern Colorado's quarterback four times. Three of those picks were by linebackers. Greg Jones recorded the first two interceptions of his career in the game. True freshman Max Bullough had his first pick as well. Safety Trenton Robinson also recorded picked off a pass.
