Is Doran Grant a Buckeye?
Lots of Internet speculation is going around that All-American prospect Doran Grant has made his decision and will join Jim Tressel and become a Buckeye. Grant is rated the top cornerback prospect in the nation for the class of 2011 and a Rivals 100 prospect. SpartanMag.com has the latest.
Despite several internet reports indicating that Doran Grant may have made a decision, no official announcement of where he will attend has been made. Grant will hold off on making a formal announcement until the Under Amour All-American Game on Wednesday night.
Grant told SpartanMag.com the following tonight:
"I am still undecided choosing between the Spartan and The Buckeye, I am not committed."
Some Spartan fans are worried the defeat by Alabama may have hurt the Spartans chances with Grant. Spartan fans seem to forget that it is Ohio State that has lost 9 straight games to the SEC including lopsided games against Florida and LSU. Individual losses rarely are the deciding factor. Grant has been recruited by the Spartans and Buckeyes for close to 2 years. The relationships and belief he has with the staff is much more important.
Make no mistake about it, Michigan State needs to add talent to the roster in the secondary. A prospect like Grant could join with young players William Gholston, Max Bullough and Lawrence Thomas to form a core of defensive difference-makers. Interstingly, the Spartans also like Grant as a potential wide receiver prospect.
One intersting factor is that the Buckeyes took a commitment this past fall from Florida State transfer Dionte Allen. Allen is already enrolled At Ohio State University. Allen was brought in to replace graduating senior Chimdi Chekwa. Michigan State was also a possible destination for Allen, to replace senior Chris L Rucker.
Ohio State source seem very confident that Grant will select them. The Buckeyes have had their way with Ohio kids for a long time. Could Grant blaze a new trail? Back in the 1990's a highly sought after defensive back prospect spurned the Buckeyes and went on become the most dynamic two-way player in college football, Charles Woodson.
Mark Dantonio has Michigan State at the top of the Big Ten with several players he did not even recruit, could Grant become the face of the future? We will have to wait until Wednesday to find out.
