Practice Report II - Sunday night's breakdown
--The offense seemed to get the best of the defense in the second practice of the day Sunday night. But that's in large part because Garrett Gilbert and Connor Wood worked at quarterback against a lot of young players.
--Both Gilbert and Wood had a good night. Not much separated their perfromances.
--The tempo of Bryan Harsin's offense really stood out. QBs were throwing to spots, most of the completed passes were short and intermediate. But both QBs looked comfortable and had a high rate of accuracy.
--Jaxon Shipley worked with the young group Sunday night and drew a lot of praise from Bryan Harsin. Shipley isn't having many bad moments in practices. He will contribute a ton this season.
--The name that jumped out among the receivers tonight was Miles Onyegbule. At 6-4 and 210 pounds, it's hard not to notice him. But he caught everything tonight and looked good doing it.
--Traylon Shead worked a lot at running back. So did Joe Bergeron and Jeremy Hills. All solid. Not spectacular. Solid.
--On the offensive line, Sedrick Flowers had a really good night. The pads don't go on until Monday. But Flowers plays with a flat back and good footwork. Flowers was working at right guard.
--Marcus Hutchins was working at right tackle, and held up well.
--So did Dominic Espinosa at center. He was beaten once by Taylor Bible, but, for the most part, Espinosa dominated Bible and the rest of his competition.
--Taylor Doyle worked at left tackle and had a pretty good night.
--Good news on Thomas Ashcraft. He practiced with the morning group. But he's probably lost 20 pounds. Don't count out Ashcraft in the battle for left guard. (Or right guard if this experiment with Mason Walters at right tackle continues.)
--On defense, Desmond Jackson continues to stand out at tackle. He was the star of the defensive line Sunday night. Again, the pads come on Monday, and we'll get a much better picture then. But Jackson gets upfield and has serious ball getoff.
--Ashton Dorsey and Calvin Howell worked in the morning on Sunday and appeared to have a good day.
--At linebacker, Tevin Jackson looked comfortable tonight. He was the standout among the linebacking group.
--The pads go on Monday, when we'll get an even better picture of things.
