Hawkeyes visit Kozan
The recruiting process for Alex Kozan is starting to come to an end. Right now the four star offensive lineman in the Class of 2012 doesn't have a feeling about when that end might come. This weekend he heads out for his fourth official visit to Auburn, but on Wednesday he met with Iowa offensive line coach Reese Morgan for another sales pitch from the Hawkeyes.
"Coach Morgan was here today. He was also out earlier in this recruiting period for a visit too," Kozan said. "He was here obviously trying to get me to come to Iowa. He thinks it would be a great fit for me and I think that too. It's a great place and he just answered any questions I had."
The relationship with the Iowa coaching staff started in the spring and included an official visit this fall. The 6-foot-4 and 295 pound lineman from Castle Rock, CO says he feels very comfortable with what Iowa has to offer.
"I've been talking to Iowa since the spring and we talk every week, so I know a lot about the school and the program. They have put a lot of linemen in the NFL and Coach Morgan is one of the best at developing his players and Coach Doyle is one of the best strength and conditioning coaches in college football and Coach Ferentz resume speaks for itself."
One other factor that could work in Iowa's favor is the stability of the program and the coaching staff. Kozan has seen changes at programs that have been recruiting him and that's one of the factors working in Iowa's favor.
"It is interesting to see where coaches go and how it impacts recruiting. That's one of the things I really like about Iowa. They have a very stable coaching situation with Coach Ferentz and his staff."
As fate would have it, Kozan might have an opportunity to watch another Iowa game in person before he makes his final decision. He is scheduled to play in the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl in Phoenix around the same time that Iowa will be playing Oklahoma in the 2011 Insight Bowl.
"Coach Morgan talked to me about the All American game today and said Iowa has a couple of commits playing in that game," Kozan said. "He also talked to me about the Insight Bowl. Even though they can't provide me with tickets, if I can, I might go to the game and watch them play."
Iowa isn't alone in their pursuit of Kozan. This weekend he will make his official visit to Auburn. He said his final four schools will likely be: Iowa, Auburn, Michigan, and Ohio State. Kozan didn't completely rule out a fifth school getting involved and taking his final visit, but at this point he is down to those four college programs.
The Ohio State scholarship situation remains fluid, Kozan said. With Urban Meyer on board as the new head coach, Kozan has been in touch with Buckeyes about his scholarship and where he might be in their pecking order.
"I've talked to them a little bit. They are still in the process of seeing who they want. They seem to be focused on tackles, so I'm not sure they will take an interior player like myself."
As far as a final decision, Kozan says he has not set a date to make a decision and doesn't appear to be in a big rush at this time.
"I really don't know when I will make my college choice," he said. "Once I finish my visit this week I am going to start to work to narrow my list of schools and start thinking more about a final decision."
