Flashes track Fla. star
The Kent State football program has been reeling in commitments over the last two weeks and they continue to track some key targets as we get closer to National Signing Day. One prospect the Kent State staff has identified as a key target is Seffner (Fla.) Armwood running back Wade Edwards. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound prospect was recently offered a scholarship by the Flashes.
"The coach (Jon Heacock) came to the school a couple of weeks ago," said Edwards. "He said he wanted to see my highlight tape and stuff like that and I talked to him later that night and he said that I had an offer."
Though Edwards admittedly doesn't know much about Kent State, he does value the offer from the Flashes.
"I was excited about the offer," he said. "The location, I was like 'Ohio wow, that's far' but it's my best offer at the moment so if I was to go there I would get used to it."
The Flashes are now in a five-team race for the shifty back out of the Sunshine State and more schools could enter the fray soon.
"I have offers from UAB, Stony Brook, Youngstown State, and FAU," he said. "I'm also hearing from Toledo, Middle Tennessee St., Marshall, New Mexico, FIU, and that's about it."
Edwards' most recent offer is from Florida Atlantic, a more local program than many of the others on his list.
"When FAU first offered me and they were coming to see, I was like FAU doesn't have a real good football program but I talked to the head coach and he came from Nebraska. He was the defensive coordinator at Nebraska and he brought some of the old staff with him so I think they might improve and they might be a program on the rise."
So does Edwards have any favorite schools at the moment?
"Not really," he said. "Growing up my favorite school used to be USF, with my maturity that kind of changed so I don't really have a favorite school or anything like that. I'm just trying to go somewhere and get a free education."
Edwards will make an official visit to Kent State on January 20th.
