'Victory points toward us becoming elite'
Paul Konyndyk
SpartanMag.com TAMPA - Mark Dantonio has guided his team to bowl appearances in each of his first five years at the helm of the Michigan State program.
But until now a bowl victory has eluded the Spartans.
Michigan State (11-3) snapped its five-game bowl losing streak dating back to 2003 Alamo Bowl with a 33-30 overtime victory over SEC East champion Georgia (10-4).
"This is a tremendous bowl," Dantonio said. "I want to congratulate Georgia on a great football game. It was a great game. They have a great football team and obviously played hard as well."
Michigan State trailed 16-0 at halftime. The Spartans scored their first touchdown on an 8-yard run by Le'Veon Bellmidway through the third quarter. A 1-yard run by Bell with 15 seconds remaining sent the game to overtime. The Spartans secured the 33-30 victory when junior nose tackle Anthony Rashad White blocked the field goal attempt of Blair Walsh during the third overtime period.
