VanGorder not changing his plan for defense
AUBURN -- Defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder spent the past six seasons in the NFL, where players work long hours everyday to perfect their trade.
Life in college ball is much different.
Still, VanGorder believes his plan to implement a complex defensive system at Auburn will yield dividends sooner rather than later. He's prepared to continue developing his players rather than modify his system to match their current level of ability.
He thinks that would be an unnecessary - and potentially dangerous - concession.
"I don't see us as a line-up-and-delete scheme right now. I think we have to carry some things that give us a better chance, better opportunity, but we're keeping it," VanGorder said. "We haven't gone into any games with a large package. In my mind, we've kept it to the point where I felt they could execute well. Give some of the teams we've played credit, too. The team we played last week was a little more settled down, but they were more spread sets the whole game. You can't just line up against it and necessarily have success at a high rate right now."
