COLLIER: Back when football was fun
AUBURN -- Homecoming is traditionally a breather -- a dull game against a 'weak sister,' an excuse to fill the stands with children and while away a pleasant afternoon in-between the "real" games on the schedule.
As nothing much is normal for Auburn this year, the Homecoming tilt against New Mexico State wound up being something other than that. Fortunately, for once, that something other didn't turn out to be yet another dispiriting loss, although the early going was far from comforting.
For a while in the first half, it was just more of the same for Auburn. A sputtering, scoreless and thoroughly depressing first quarter was riddled with incomplete passes, penalties, a fumble and other now-standard 2012 buffoonery. Worse, the Aggies were moving the ball up and down the field while the Tigers were stumbling through three-and-outs with familiar regularity.
