Workout Insider Report: We are the champions
In a rerun of last Thursday, the scorching heat returned and the players completed the work capacity circuit training drills with the heat index well over 100 degrees. The formal portion of the workout wrapped up with the completion of another fourth quarter teamwork drill. Although several players were exhausted and panting heavily at the end, every one made it through what may have been the toughest workout left before the start of two-a-day practices in a couple weeks.
"I was fired up about last summer, I thought they did well but I think this summer has been even better," strength and conditioning coach Jon Jost said. "The numbers (are up) and they seem to really enjoy being around each other."
A large majority of the players hung around to work within their positional groups, including Drew Weatherford working with the offensive linemen on the running game. And as is usually the case, a little later the quarterbacks, receivers and defensive backs broke off for passing drills.
Instead of a full 7-on-7, which has been the norm the past couple weeks, Thursday was devoted to 1-on-1 drills matching up wide receivers against defensive backs, and tight ends against linebackers. As has been the case many times this summer, sophomore Richard Goodman stole the show. He caught pretty much everything in sight and could not be covered in open space by any defensive back.
