Stepping into the driver's seat
It has been two long years in the making. After a 3-9 2003 campaign the program had hit a new low. The victories, against Temple, Kent State, and Indiana, had done nothing to fuel the confidence of the fans.
But in February 2004, a ray of hope shined down on Happy Valley, in the form of blue-chip quarterback named Anthony Morelli. The kid from Pittsburgh had a cannon for an arm and was the recruit that was going to lead Penn State back to the top.
It is now 2006, and after 33 career pass attempts, one touchdown pass and two years of eligibility in the books, the golden boy will make his first ever start at quarterback for the Nittany Lions against the Akron Zips.
On Saturday, Morelli will take the front seat on the bus en route to the stadium, something that has been on his mind for a long, long time. He is focused on the task at hand, and does not want to get caught up in the hype.
"I've been thinking about that for two years, and I finally get my chance to do that," said Morelli. "I just have to keep my head on straight and focus on the game. I can't get caught up in all the hype and stuff that happens before the game. It's another football game to me, I've been doing this my whole life, and I'm excited. I can't wait to get out there in front of our fans and play Akron."
