The Georgia Bulldogs (6-3, 3-3) will be shorthanded on the offensive line for the fifth time this season as they head to Lexington to face the Kentucky Wildcats (4-4, 2-3).
Junior guard Chester Adams is out for the Kentucky after re-injuring his ankle earlier this week in practice. Head coach Mark Richt announced before practice Thursday that Adams will not make the trip to Lexington.
"I do not think Cheese will travel with us and I do not think he is healthy enough to go and he would be better off staying at home and getting some rehab," said Richt of Adams' status for Saturday.
Without Adams in the lineup, sophomore Seth Watts will backup starting tight guard Michael Turner. If any of the tackles are injured or need a break Watts will come in the game and Turner will shift to either tackle position.
Georgia has had all eight of their offensive linemen rotation players healthy for only three games this season, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, and Florida which also happen to be Georgia's three losses this year.
Georgia will start four seniors Nick Jones, Turner, Daniel Inman, Ken Shackleford, and one junior Fernando Velasco against Kentucky.
Dawgs looking at JUCO OL
Coach Richt was asked Thursday about Georgia looking at junior college offensive linemen to fill in the gaps in their offensive line next season and he said there are looking, "a good bit and we are working on that right now."
Richt has been reluctant in the past to bring in junior college players because Georgia prefers to have their players mature in their system and only play as upper classmen.
"Sometimes you have to do that (recruit junior college players), but you do not want to build your program around that where every year you have to rely on that. I would much rather get them in young and work them through the program," said Richt.
Georgia will return only nine scholarship offensive linemen next season and only one player with game experience at offensive tackle in Chester Adams.
"There are times when you have depth issues and you just have to find some mature people," said Richt.
Some players Georgia may be looking at did not play as freshman in junior college and have three years of Division I-A eligibility.
"That would be the best you could hope for, but that is not a deciding factor," said Richt of picking junior college players with three years of eligibility left.
Ware to return kicks again
Junior running back Danny Ware will be returning kicks for the Bulldogs again this week as they head to Kentucky.
"We are comfortable with him doing it or we would not have him back there," said Richt of having Ware return kickoffs. "I think he has got more work this week and is feeling better about it and we feel good about him being out there."
Ware returned two kicks against Florida for 30 yards last week in his first action at Georgia as a kick returner.
Working behind Ware at kick returner are freshmen Asher Allen, Prince Miller, and Bryan Evans, and sophomore Ramarcus Brown.
Special Teams star named Captain
Junior safety Drew Williams was named a captain for the Kentucky game after a strong special teams performance against Florida in Jacksonville. Williams recorded three total tackles on kickoff coverage last week.
"I guess it was more of a shock than anything and it was totally unexpected and something like that is such a honor and when you achieve something like that you do not want to take it for granted and have a let down game," said Williams. "Hopefully it will work out for me and not jinx me."
Williams has ten total tackles this season all on kickoffs.
Ely-Kelso looking to get back on track
Senior punter Gordon Ely-Kelso has struggled the last few games punting the football according to his own standards. After having a blocked punt for the first time in his career, Ely-Kelso's production dropped in the last several games.
"I am definitely not kicking right now like I feel like I can," said Ely-Kelso. "I do not think it had anything to do with the blocks, that kind of happened and then it started and I think it is a coincidence."
Ely-Kelso does not think he has changed his approach to the ball, but he thinks maybe his leg is fatigued at this point in the season.
"I do not think I am doing anything different I just think I am in a slump I guess," said Ely-Kelso. "This is my ten week in a row of kicking so my leg is tired so I am trying to conserve my leg, but I am not kicking very well so I want to kick. I am trying to kick a little more, but not over do it at the same time, but basically I have to kick and it will happen."
Despite his recent struggles, Ely-Kelso is still leading the SEC in punting.
Injury Report
Freshman linebacker Darius Dewberry (hamstring) and junior guard Chester Adams (ankle) did not practice Thursday.
Practicing in green jerseys Thursday were Mohammed Massaquoi (hamstring), Mikey Henderson (hamstring), Sean Bailey (ACL), Knowshon Moreno (hamstring), and Reshad Jones (ankle).
Freshman receiver Tony Wilson's shoulder has improved and he is now taking full contact in practice again.
Other Notes and Quotes
Georgia will face Kentucky for the 60th time since 1939 Saturday. Georgia has won the last nine straight meeting over Kentucky.
"I am not sure and it does not seem like anymore than any other week, we have the same kind of stuff. Going in basically we have the same plays and the same gameplan as a lot of teams we played already and I do not see us running and shooting too much," said freshman quarterback Matthew Stafford when asked if the Dawgs plan to throw the ball a lot against Kentucky.
