Richt excited about UGA offense

UGASports.com UGA head coach Mark Richt spoke with the media Wednesday about the Georgia offense as they prepare for the 2007 campaign. The Dawgs return most of their offensive skill players, but the offensive line is a major concern.
"It is nice to talk about something else for a while," Richt joked about not having a quarterback controversy this spring. "I think this spring is exciting like a lot of springs because of the unknown. You ask, 'How is it all going to come out?' I feel like we have enough talented players, at every position across the board, and the coaches are just going to bring it out of them. It is just a matter of who is going to rise to the top, and I am looking forward to watching it."
Sophomore Matthew Stafford returns as the starter at quarterback after a successful freshman campaign that saw him start out the season at number four on the depth chart, but by season's end had started nine games. Stafford passed for 1,749 yards and seven touchdowns while rushing for 191 yards and three more scores.
"I think we about maxed out his ability to run this last season," said Richt. "I thought that he did a very good job, and I think he surprised some people by how he was able to run, and I think people will have to account for him as a runner. That is very valuable if you are trying to get a plan against somebody and they feel that your quarterback is a big enough threat to run the ball and hurt you, then they have to assign somebody to him in some of your run schemes."
Competing behind Stafford will be sophomores Joe Cox and junior Blake Barnes. Cox, who played in four games last season, completed 60 percent of his passes with two touchdowns and one interception. Barnes did not see any action.
