Urban Meyer has not had any coaching defections at Florida entering his third year as the Gators' football coach. Keeping everyone on the same page and having continuity within the coaching staff can play a major role in success on the field.
"You better be leaving here to be a head coach or you better be leaving here to go to some ridiculous pay scale in the NFL or somewhere else," Meyer said at Wednesday's meeting with the media to preview spring practice.
"You don't leave Florida. (Assistant head coach) Charlie Strong is testimony to that. (Co-defensive coordinator) Greg Mattison is. Those guys can all pick up the phone tomorrow and go wherever they want. Steve Addazio had many opportunities. "Doc" Holliday had opportunities. Chuck Heater had opportunities.
"I'm all for opportunities, but it better be a really good one. Our administration takes care of them. I know the head coach is really appreciative of what they do. A lot of them are dads. I don't have to worry about a lot of the things big city people have to worry about in Gainesville. I really enjoy knowing my kids have a pretty good opportunity to get an education and grow up. I'm sure our coaches feel the same way." . . .
Meyer said he is all in favor of opportunities and true sophomore running back Mon Williams will get one in spring practice. Williams played in eight games last season and finished with 101 yards on 13 attempts (7.8 yards per carry). Junior Kestahn Moore, who had 282 yards and two touchdowns on 54 carries, also returns to Florida's backfield.
