Paul Williams in the middle for now
The Texas Tech linebacking corps is without question the most mysterious unit on the Red Raider football team. The departure of seniors Brock Stratton and Fletcher Session, the injury to Chad Hill, the appearance of newcomers Marlon Williams, Brian Duncan and Julius Howard, and the move of Blake Collier from safety to linebacker have all served to throw the linebacker situation into apparent disarray.
And ironically, the presence of Paul Williams, perhaps the most consistent and reliable linebacker on the team, only serves to deepen the mystery.
Williams, after all, is an extremely versatile player, having played all three positions. He backed up weakside linebacker Fletcher Session for most of the 2006 season before assuming the first-team SAM position late in the year, and he now resides in the middle.
Versatility is a great thing, but for outside observers, this means that you never know for sure where Williams will line up.
The senior from Tyler, however, was good enough to clarify the situation
at least for the moment.
"As of the present, I'm in the middle but things can change in the blink of an eye just like last season. Right now I'm prepared to be in the middle but it can be any of the three positions come the season."
Williams confirms, furthermore, that the injured Chad Hill is slated to play WILL and that senior Kellen Tillman remains ensconced at SAM. Were those three to start, it would be an all-senior unit.
