Heygood proving himself

Two years ago, when Anthony Heygood saw playing at fullback for Purdue, his job was to collide with linebackers.

Now, he'll be on the receiving end.

The Boilermaker junior was the No. 1 fullback in 2005, but last season, played more of a true tailback role in practice and was limited to only special teams work in practice.

So, midway through the season, the 6-foot-2, 230-pounder - buried on the offensive depth chart, or so it seemed - was moved to linebacker.

Now, he's learning on the fly, as he's slated to Purdue's starter at weak-side linebacker.

"I guess it's better to learn on the run out here, because the season's coming," Heygood said. "Out here, I can be out on the field learning from my mistakes."

Heygood is one of just a couple new starters on the defense, replacing Dan Bick on the weak side. Bick is slated to move to middle linebacker in 2007.
