Davis is the real deal
During Kirk Ferentz's tenure as head football coach at the University of Iowa, you could count on one hand the number of in-state sophomores to receive an early offer from the Hawkeyes. So when something like that occurs, as it did recently with Cedar Rapids Washington wide receiver Keenan Davis, you can bet it is a name to watch not only in the state, but probably on a national level down the road as well.
As a sophomore, the 6-foot-3, 188-pound Davis exploded onto the scene, catching 43 passes for 783 yards and eight touchdowns as Washington finished the season with a 6-3 record in Lombardi's first year at the school. When the Iowa coaches hit the road this month during the May Evaluation Period, which is typically to inquire about current juniors, it was a sophomore that drew them to Cedar Rapids.
Lombardi also received a visit from the new coaching staff at Iowa State and has been in contact with Illinois as well. Now that the word is out on Davis, the coach, who previously spent four years at Hinsdale Central in Illinois, says this is only the beginning.
