The Hawk rises once again
Right after the tip of his fingers made contact with the pigskin, Lavelle Hawkins forcefully hauled in the ball and quickly turned his head to see nothing but green grass ahead of him. He sprinted down the middle of the field with defenders on his tail. He got down inside the 10, then to the five, then to the four, the three, the two, before stumbling and falling down at the one-yard line. There are many subplots going into the Cal football team's matchup with Arizona Saturday afternoon. But, for the Bears' senior wide receiver, he'd be lying if he said this game didn't mean a little bit more.
Wildcats' All-American cornerback Antoine Cason had just intercepted and returned an errant Nate Longshore pass down the left sideline to put Arizona up 24-17 early in the fourth quarter of last season's November bout in Tucson (Ariz.).
