Who's hot heading into the Kentucky game?
The South Carolina Gamecocks moved to 4-1 on the 2007 season after defeating the Mississippi State Bulldogs 38-21 over the weekend. This article takes a look at five players who are "hot" for 11th ranked Carolina heading into Thursday night's huge contest with the No. 8 Kentucky Wildcats.
Chris Smelley, QB, 6-1, 221, Fr., Tuscaloosa, Ala.
In his the first Southeastern Conference start of his career, Smelley responded by completing 19-37 passes for 279 yards and two touchdowns, by far the best game of any Carolina quarterback this season. He spread the ball around nicely, as nine Gamecocks were credited with receiving yards on the day. He also displayed excellent pocket awareness, something Steve Spurrier has been seeking from his quarterbacks all year. Smelley took a major step towards cementing himself as the starting signal caller in Columbia for the rest of the 2007 season.
Marvin Sapp, LB, 5-11, 225, Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.
Sapp stepped into the injured Jasper Brinkley's shoes at middle linebacker and responded with eight first half tackles against Mississippi State. His snap count decreased dramatically in the second half, but he'll be counted on heavily against the Kentucky Wildcats on Thursday night when Anderson, S.C. native Rafael Little comes to town hoping to finally get a win against his home state team.
