Monday morning quarterbacking: Wake Forest
NC State could have taken a huge step towards a bowl game last Saturday, but they suffered a 38-18 loss at Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. That defeat leaves NC State with a 5-6 overall record and 3-4 mark in the ACC heading into Saturday's huge game against Maryland in Carter-Finley Stadium. Now it's time for some Monday Morning Quarterbacking.
Key moment of the game:
It's not hard to figure out the key moment in this game. NC State had totally dominated the third quarter after a dismal first half. A pair of Wolfpack touchdowns had cut a 21-3 halftime deficit to 21-18. The Deacs had just one first down on its first three drives of the second half. All the momentum was totally on NC State's side of the field.
That all changed however with just one play. Wake Forest sophomore quarterback Riley Skinner connected with true freshman Jordan Williams flying down the sideline for a 62-yard touchdown. NC State junior corner Jeremy Gray had the coverage on the play, running stride for stride with Williams, but he did not turn to locate the ball until it was too late. Gray lost his balance trying to recover and Williams strolled into the end zone.
That one play seemed to kill NC State's momentum, and two fourth quarter turnovers made sure that there would be no late rally.
