LB Gainer interested in Spartans
Head Coach Mark Dantonio and the Michigan State Spartans will be holding a Junior Day function this weekend. Many of the best players in the state of Michigan will be in attendance. Spartanmag.com spoke with one player that will be there that is getting plenty y of early interest from team around the Big Ten, linebacker Jeremy Gainer of Livonia Clarenceville High School.
Gainer is a 6-foot-2, 210-pound prospect that is getting looked at by numerous Big Ten teams. Though he plays safety and is listed at that position in the Rivals.com database, Gainer projects as a linebacker at the next level.
"I am hearing from Michigan State, Iowa, Purdue, Indiana, Illinois Cincinnati and Stanford the most," Gainer said. "All of the teams are looking at me as a WILL or outside linebacker. I went to a junior day at Indiana the other week and Cincinnati also invited me to their junior day as well. I am going to Purdue's on March 1st and Illinois wants me come down there. This weekend I will be at Michigan State."
The visit to Michigan State will not be the first for Gainer.
"I was there a few weeks ago for the Michigan State vs. Michigan State basketball game and I also was up there for the Michigan football game too, he said. I know a few guys that are up there, Mark Dell, Chris Rucker and Durrel Summers. I played basketball against them."
Gainer had an outstanding season for the Trojans this past fall. Despite the teams overall struggles, Gainer excelled at safety on defense. He also played quarterback and was the voted the conference's most exciting player by the Observer & Eccentric newspaper. At the end of the season he was named 1st Team All-Metro Conference, League Defensive MVP and 2nd Team All-West.
Gainer is known for being a fine all-around athlete. Right now he is a key player on Clarenceville's 18-1 basketball team. As a sophomore he averaged 13.6 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. This coming Monday Clarenceville will meet Detroit Renaissance in an opening round playoff game.
In the spring Gainer participates in track. He runs the 100M, 200M, and 400M and also competes in the long jump. As a sophomore Gainer clocked an 11.2 in the 100M and a 22.9 in the 200M.
As far as a favorite school at this stage in the recruiting process Gainer indicated the following.
"Michigan State, Purdue, Indian and Stanford would be the teams I am really interested," he said.
Did you have a favorite team growing up?
"Growing up most of my family was split. Some were Michigan fans and some were Michigan State fans so I kind of rooted for both teams, lately though I have been leaning toward Michigan State," Gainer said.
Gainer comes from an athletic family. A few years ago his brother Jemere was one of the better players in Southeast Michigan. He is now at Southern Illinois and doing well as a defensive end for the Salukis.
Gainer indicated that at this point he does not have any scholarship offers. Teams are waiting to see how well he performs at spring and summer camps. Gainer intends on attending the NIKE Camp as well as several college camps. A stop in East Lansing to work with the Spartan staff is definitely on the agenda.
Gainer is one of the prospect that was invited the Rivals.com 5-Satr Junior Day on March 16th. SpartanMag.com will look to get his highlight film at that event and upload it into the database shortly thereafter.
