Five areas to watch this spring
As Texas A&M heads into the start of spring practice Tuesday, there are a few areas that Aggie fans are going to be watching closely. There are five in particular that should be noted.
Strength and conditioning
Strength and conditioning, or lack thereof, was a key factor in why former head coach Dennis Franchione could not return the A&M program to prominence. The emphasis on how much even the wide receivers could bench press resulted in an overall team that lacked flexibility, conditioning and lower body strength.
The Aggies were unable to deal with teams that spread the field on offense which, unfortunately, has become the norm in college football. In particular, A&M struggled in Big 12 play to stop the run against Oklahoma State, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri - all of who were spread teams and averaged over 4.0 yards per carry versus the Aggies - and even Texas Tech. The Aggies also registered just 18 sacks and forced only 24 turnovers on the season.
