Scrimmage Insider: Red-zone fireworks
With Drew Weatherford watching from the sideline nursing an injured knee, it was all up to Christian Ponder and D'Vontrey Richardson to run the offense in Wednesday's half scrimmage. The two got a baptism by fire taking all the snaps during the 11-on-11 session.
The scrimmage turning into a back and forth tennis match with the defense holding the upper hand for the bulk of the day, while the start and finish were owned by the offense.
In a short yardage situational drill, the first team offense appeared to convert first downs four straight times against the first team defense (one play was close). Three times in the series, Antone Smith was able to reach the first down marker. On one run, the senior running back broke two tackle attempts behind the line of scrimmage and then bounced to the outside to pick up the necessary yardage. Marcus Sims, who lined up at the running back on the second team offense, was also able to run for a first down against the second team defense.
