Massive OL to camp at MSU?
A few weeks ago SpartanMag.com stated that Ohio was the place to look for offensive line recruits for the class of 2009. The Buckeye State is loaded with quality prospects, including Henry Conway of Shaker Heights High School. Find out the details on this massive prospect and when he could be in East Lansing to check out the Spartans first hand.
Offensive line recruiting usually takes center stage in the summer as no position is evaluated more closely at camps. Position coaches want to see firsthand how well prospects perform and react to their coaching. The 6-foot-6, 300-pound Conway is a player that the Michigan State staff hopes to have on campus in the coming weeks. We asked Conway about his recruitment.
"Right now I am focusing on summer school and getting my grades up," Conway said. "I made the mistake of fooling around my freshman year and now I need to get my grades up so I can pass the NCAA Clearinghouse. I plan on turning some of those bad grades into A's I just took the ACT, so I am looking forward to getting that score back to see how I did."
Despite his current academic status numerous teams feel that it is a safe bet that Conway's hard work over the summer will pay-off. He already has scholarship offers on the table from Indiana, Cincinnati, Bowling Green and Ohio. Akron has told Conway he has a conditional offer and team like Michigan State, Ohio State Michigan, Boston College, West Virginia and Kansas have all been in frequent contact.
Despite a busy summer school and workout schedule, Conway indicated that he plans on hitting a few camps this summer in order to showcase his skills and possibly garner additional scholarship offers.
"I am going to Bowling Green this Saturday" he said. "My Coach has talked about taking me to Michigan and Michigan State. I am pretty sure Michigan State is one of the places we are definitely go to go to."
The Spartan have a camp session scheduled for later this week and will also hold a 3-day camp session in mid-July. Michigan State may have a good shot at acquiring the services of Conway as not only are they looking for a dominant offensive tackle for the class of 2009, but Conway indicated that playing in the Big Ten is one of his ultimate goals.
"Yes, I would really like to play in the Big Ten, he said. I was hearing from Georgia a bit and the SEC would be a great place to play, I have some family down there. I like the Big Ten though, or a really good Big East program."
In addition to working hard in the classroom this summer, Conway has also been working getting ready for his senior year.
"We do weightlifting Monday, Wednesday and Fridays," he said. "On Tuesday and Thursday we do BSF (Bigger, Strong, and Faster). We are working hard. I think we are going to have a real good season."
Spartanmag.com will be sure to follow-up with Conway in the coming weeks. The recent commitment of Illinois offensive line prospect Mike Schofield and Sean Cascarano mean that Ohio will likely be ground zero for the Spartan's offense line recruiting efforts. With players like Conway still on the board, that certainly is not a bad thing for Coach Mark Dantonio and Michigan State.
