Colorado State adds big 2009 safety
Dallas (Texas) Spruce safety Donavan Bonner has been impressing several coaches this summer with his performances at camps all over the midland region. It looks as though Bonner has just teased his talents only to take them away as he decided on Tuesday to end his recruitment and committed to Colorado State.
"I'm going to try to get to Colorado State as soon as possible because I had verbally committed today," Bonner said Tuesday evening. "The coaches treat me like family and I like the atmosphere up there and they were talking about playing me as a true freshman. I just overall like the atmosphere and them."
Bonner labeled his commitment a 'soft verbal' but he didn't anticipate a decommitment.
"I'm happy with my commitment but right now it's like a soft verbal," he said. "But I'm not really into decommitting and stuff. They've been recruiting me for a while since my sophomore year and I liked the school and I felt like it was time."
Bonner is a big safety at 6-foot-2, 225 pounds and could grow into an outside linebacker for the Rams.
"I have great ball skills and with my size I can play safety or even outside linebacker," he said. "I have experience at quarterback too. I threw for almost 600 yards in two games. I'm probably at free safety but I know if I gain a little more weight I'll be a linebacker. At the SMU camp I weighed in at 228."
Among the camps that Bonner has impressed at this summer have been SMU, UTEP and Oklahoma State. Despite the commitment, Bonner still plans to attend more, including the Tulsa camp this weekend.
