Practice report: Tigers open fall camp
The Tigers went through a sweltering two hour workout in a heat index well over 100 degrees on the Kadlec Athletic Fields on Monday afternoon. Gary Pinkel said a few drills were altered due heat-related concerns, but Mizzou didn't hold back in the first workout of fall camp. PowerMizzou.com has the day's full wrap up.
*Only two players were not at practice as expected. Drew Temple and Aldon Smith are currently held up in the NCAA Clearinghouse. Pinkel said he fully expected both to be ready to go by the end of the week or early next week. Smith was at practice, but did not work out. Temple was not in attendance that I saw.
*Team captains are Chase Daniel, Ziggy Hood, Tommy Saunders and William Moore. No surprises there.
*One of the most closely watched positions this fall will be punter. Early returns were good. Jake Harry boomed a few in the special teams portion of practice and I didn't see a single shank.
*Derrick Washington is going to be so much more involved in the passing game than the backs have been the last few seasons. He was running a few routes well downfield. It's just a gut feeling, but I think he's going to be very, very good very, very quickly.
*Play of the Day: Washington caught a pass over the middle and headed up field. Sean Weatherspoon reached in and knocked the ball free and one of his defensive mates pounced on it.
The Tigers will return to practice at 7:15 on Tuesday morning and we will have another full report.
