Practice report: Tigers tune up for scrimmage
With the first full scrimmage of fall camp looming tomorrow, the Missouri Tigers hit the practice field for a final tuneup on Monday morning. PowerMizzou.com recaps the two-and-a-half hour workout:
*Fresh off another top ten finish, Columbia native Carl Edwards was at practice for a while. He spent about 15 minutes chatting with Gary Pinkel after practice.
*Some injury news: Castine Bridges missed the workout again with a sore hip. Pinkel said there was no structural damage and he should be able to scrimmage tomorrow. Justin Garrett was limited with a sore neck, but also will be ready to go tomorrow. Jeff Wolfert was sore and did limited work, but nothing serious. Brian Coulter went back and forth between wearing a red bib most of the day.
*Carl Gettis is moving all over the place. I'll have more in a full story tomorrow, but Pinkel said Gettis would be the current backup at the nickel position, basically the spot William Moore plays, almost a hybrid safety/linebacker. However, Pinkel stressed that Gettis was a cornerback first.
*I spent a long time watching the punters early in practice. By my unofficial count, Jake Harry averaged 40.6 yards on 19 punts and Grant Ressel averaged 33.2 on the same number. Ressel might kick the ball higher, but he doesn't have the distance of Harry. As much as some want to make this a competition, I just don't think it is.
*Pinkel cancelled today's second practice and will let the team go see a movie. The Tigers will scrimmage on Tuesday morning at 7:15. The coach said he wants to get every player 40 snaps before "backing off significantly" on the more established players for Saturday's scrimmage. He also said by the beginning of next week, the staff should be pretty well set on which freshmen will see the field this fall.
