Cass Tech athlete takes long look at Central Michigan
Talented, versatile defensive players are always at a premium. Central Michigan football signed a few of them in 2009 but there is always plenty of room for more. Daniel Easterly, from Detroit Cass Tech, is a very talented defender who has been shown a lot of love by the Chippewa coaching staff.
Recently, Easterly was in Mount Pleasant for the Central Michigan Spring Football Game.
"I really enjoyed it. It was a great experience," Easterly said.
Currently, schools from all over the Midwest are recruiting Easterly. While the recruiting process can be stressful at times, Easterly is appreciating the attention shown to him.
"It's going great. I've been getting offers from a lot of schools," Easterly said. "A lot of schools have shown great interest in me and I appreciate all of the looks."
Easterly has been listed at just about every position except for punter. However, he will likely end up on the defensive side of the ball in college. As a junior, he had 73 tackles, 15 pass break-ups, 3 interceptions and 4 fumble recoveries.
"In college, I would like to play defensive back, but most colleges say I would make a good linebacker," Easterly said. "If I can play safety, I'll play safety but most colleges think I can grow into a really good outside linebacker."
With interest from a variety of great schools, Daniel is still attempting to narrow down his list. However, he knows what he is looking for in a school.
"I'm looking for a school with good academics first," Easterly said. "I will also look at the social life. I want to go to a school where I can fit in and gel real well with it. I'm just looking for an all around good school."
The coach at CMU in charge of recruiting Daniel is defensive coordinator Tim Banks.
"He's a great coach and I really enjoy being around him," Easterly said. "He is really cool and I really enjoy being recruited by him."
While Coach Banks has done a good job of getting to know Daniel on a personal level, he has also done a good job of showing Daniel all of the things he could do playing in the CMU defense.
"I like Central Michigan's defense. It's very aggressive," Easterly said. "I've seen them play before and I really liked how hard they played."
While all of the schools recruiting Daniel would like him to choose them tomorrow, Daniel is no rush to make a college decision.
"I think I'm going to make a decision after my senior season or possibly earlier," Easterly said. "As of right now though, I plan on deciding after my senior season."
The recruiting process is nothing new to Daniel though. He attends Detroit Cass Tech, which sends plenty of football players to college every year. He also has two brothers who are currently playing college football.
"I have two older brothers. One goes to Wayne State and the other goes to Indiana State," Easterly said. "I've learned most of my skills from them. One plays linebacker and the other plays cornerback so they have both taught me a lot."
