New offer, new leader?
Colin Thompson, a 2012 tight end prospect, already had offers from BCS schools such as Boston College, Pittsburgh and Rutgers.
The one he received Wednesday night, though, seemed to excite him more than the rest.
"My coach called me and said you had to call coach Greg Jackson," Thompson told BadgerBlitz.com Saturday afternoon. "I was like, 'Oh, okay.' I think he wanted to surprise me but then he said I think they're going to offer you. I was like, 'WISCONSIN?' I never really talked to them before, but I said they were in my list of 25 schools.
"When I heard it was Wisconsin I was so happy. I was so happy."
Thompson, who admittedly doesn't know much about the history of Wisconsin football, was still very impressed with the offer and went as far as saying the Badgers stood at the top of his list at this very early juncture in his recruitment.
"It's a big school and they played in the Rose Bowl," Thompson said. "It was huge. They were ranked in the top five or whatever they were in the country. It's a huge (offer) and one of my first big schools. I'm excited for more to come and I'm sure Wisconsin is at the top of my list.
"They are at the top of my list, actually."
At 6-foot-5 and 245 pounds as a junior, there were a number of things that the UW coaching staff liked about Thompson. According to the Warminster (PA) native, UW tight ends coach Joe Rudolph saw his film and fell in love with Thompson's ability at the position.
In addition to his size, Thompson said there were a number of other things that stood out for the UW coaches.
"Coach Greg Jackson was saying my size and my confidence (stood out)," Thompson said. "I'm a versatile player and my film consisted of blocking, receiving and then defense so I could play on both sides of the ball. I've got good hands and I'm a good blocker. I think that's one of the best things about me. I think that's what they love.
"They said I'm the perfect fit for Wisconsin football which is obviously an amazing thing because they're an amazing football program."
Thompson, who plans on visiting Florida later this month, is certain a trip to Madison is also in the cards.
"I heard Madison is beautiful," Thompson said. "So I am. I don't know when right now because it's kind of tough. I'm going to Florida at the end of the month and after that I'm going to start emailing coaches in regards to when I'm going to start making my trips. In February I'll probably start making a lot of trips every weekend. I'm trying to get some more offers.
"But I'm definitely going to take a trip out to Madison."
