This and That: Marquette
February 13, 2013 - Monday night before 11,821 fans, Georgetown (18-4 overall, 8-3 in BIG EAST) slugged their way to a 63-55 victory over Marquette at the Verizon Center. This BIG EAST donnybrook, featuring total numbers of 41 foul shots and 33 turnovers, was predictably a physical affair. Possessions were of value in this contest, one that brought the Hoyas revenge for their slim loss earlier, at Marquette, now 17-6, 8-3).
Marquette's head coach, Buzz Williams, lamented afterward the "twelve turnovers in the first half, and zero offensive rebounds in the first half" his team managed. "I'm not sure you can win like that in Division I, at home or on the road, with those type of numbers".
Head Hoya John Thompson acknowledged the battle royal nature of this game, saying "We played through it (fouls). It's the BIG EAST, it's a rough physical game; always has been, always will be". He eschewed the notion of adjusting strategically to such play - and the fouls possibly associated with it - saying "Just have to keep playing".
