November 16, 2009 LIVE UPDATES: from Shaw's announcement in the AlleyIt isn't by accident that Florida is currently ranked as the No. 1 team in every major poll, including the BCS Standings. While it is a given that Urban Meyer is considered to be one of the top coaches in the game today, as former coach Ron Zook was fond of saying, 'it's not about the X's and O's, it's about the Jimmy's and Joe's'. Without regard to how good a coaching staff may or may not be on game day, they aren't going to be competitive in the SEC week in and week out unless they have the horses to get the job done. As evidenced by their record on the field, Meyer and staff can certainly coach. And judging by their four straight finishes inside the Rivals.com team recruiting rankings, it's also safe to assume that they are capable of recruiting at as high a level as any staff in the country. While they have done an excellent job not only instate, but recruiting nationally as well, there's one hurdle they haven't been able to clear this point. Despite all their success along the recruiting trail, UF has yet to go out to California and pull a top high school prospect out of the Golden State that the powerhouse Southern Cal program had their sights set on signing. In the class of 2010, the Gators have several opportunities to finally break through that barrier. The first one of those opportunities is coming up on Tuesday. That is when Palmdale (Calif.) cornerback Joshua Shaw, the No. 23 rated prospect in the nation, will make his college choice known. Upon returning home from an unofficial visit to Gainesville a week ago, the 6-foot-1, 195-pounder immediately narrowed his list to Florida, Southern Cal, Ohio State and LSU. So tune in Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m. on the west coast (1:00 p.m. on the east coast) as GatorBait.net follows along with this very important announcement.
