September 27, 2010Fifth-year senior linebacker Nate Irving continues to make a successful comeback from severe injuries suffered in a car crash in June 2008. Irving was named the Walter Camp Foundation National Defensve Player of the Week after totaling career-highs 16 tackles and 4.5 tackles for losses. He also matched his career best with a pair of sacks in State's 45-28 win at Georgia Tech.
Now the ACC has joined in honoring Irving. The league named him the defensive lineman of the week after he helped hold Tech to 96 yards under their previous rushing average.
For the second consecutive week NC State redshirt junior quarterback Russell Wilson was honored by the ACC as the offensive back of the week. Wilson set a new career-high by passing for 368 yards, the 18th highest single-game mark in school history. It was the seventh time in Wilson's career he has thrown for over 300 yards.
Wilson also threw for three touchdowns, the 10th time in his career he has reached at least that total.
The league also named Miami senior Orlando Franklin the offensive lineman of the week, UNC senior linebacker Bruce Carter the defensive back of the week, Virginia Tech fifth-year senior kicker Chris Hazley as the specialist of the week and Maryland redshirt freshman quarterback Danny O'Brien the rookie of the week.
