Florida State has built its talented defense off some of the top prospects on the line with names like Tank Carradine, Bjoern Werner and Timmy Jernigan.
Last year it was five-star defensive tackle Eddie Goldman that announced he would be heading to Tallahassee. Now it appears Jimbo Fisher has landed another gem as one of the top junior prospects on the defensive line, Demarcus Christmas from Manatee (Bradenton, Fla.) committed to the 'Noles on Monday.
It was never a secret that Christmas had FSU at the top of his wish list. He grew up following that dominating defense. On Monday, Christmas gave the FSU coaching staff a little early present by announcing his college choice.
"I've known for a while that FSU is the place for me. I committed this morning to Coach Jimbo Fisher," Christmas said. "He was very, very excited, yelling into the phone."
There's no question playing on a strong defensive front was an attracting factor for Christmas. But relationships have won so many recruiting battles for the Seminoles over the years, especially defensive line coach Odell Haggins, who has landed a five star-prospect in each of the past three seasons. While Haggins probably won't sign a five star in 2013, Christmas has a chance to make up for that in 2014 when the Rivals.com class rankings come out.
"Coach Odell is one of the best defensive line coaches in the country. I know he is going to get me better," said the 6-foot-3, 285 pound defensive tackle. "He does a great job with the defensive lineman, but he is even a better person with how he makes everyone feel like a family."
Joe Kinnan, head coach of the Manatee Hurricanes describes his star defensive tackle.
"We knew as a sophomore when we were slowly bringing Demarcus along, he was going to be special and he's far from a finished prospect," Kinnan said. "What he does well is a combination of quickness, power. One of the strongest guys we have on the team, but very quick feet. I have no doubts when he graduates here next season, he's going to make an immediate impact at FSU."
Christmas is Florida State's seventh commitment for the 2014 class.
