November 10, 2012Despite playing well in San Diego State's two exhibition games (shooting 42.9 percent from three and pulling down a combined seven rebounds) and looking poised for a true freshman, 6-foot-6 wing Matt Shrigley has decided to redshirt the season.
"Yeah, best decision in the long run," he said.
SDSU is loaded at the small forward position this season, but Shrigley showed during the exhibitions that he could provide three-point shooting and instant offense off the bench for the Aztecs, which will be especially important in Sunday's season opener against Syracuse and the Orange's 2-3 zone.
"Yeah I felt the same way," Shrigley said. "But it's hard to have an 11 man rotation, especially when we have such good seniors. So hopefully I'll be able to come in next year with a year of experience under my belt and be able to contribute a lot."
The San Diego native was a three-star recruit coming out of La Costa Canyon and fell just outside the Rivals Top 150, according to national recruiting analyst Eric Bossi. Shrigley led the Mavericks to the 2012 CIF Division II state championship game and averaged 16.5 points last season.
