February 16, 2013He hasn't made it to campus yet, but Conner Frankamp already has displaced one of his future Kansas teammates.
Friday night, the 6-foot senior point guard at Wichita (Kan.) North's 36th and 37th points on a 16-foot pull-up jumper made him the all-time scoring leader in Wichita City League history. With 2,233 career points, Frankamp has moved past Kansas teammate-to-be Perry Ellis, who set the record as a senior in 2012 at Wichita Heights.
"It's a big relief," Frankamp said of setting the mark. "There was a lot of pressure, I feel like. To be the all-time leading scorer is an honor. I thank my teammates for that and my coaching staff, everybody around me."
Ranked No. 31 nationally in the 2013 Rivals150, Frankamp admitted that his omission from the recently announced McDonald's All-American team provided an extra spark.
"That was driving me a lot," said Frankamp who starred in the summer for KC Run GMC and USA Basketball's 17U team. "I have to use it as motivation to work hard and use it as motivation to outdo those guys during my career at KU."
With the scoring record out of the way, Frankamp is back to focusing on the end of his senior year. Friday night's win moved him and his North teammates to 17-2, and he's happy to get the scoring record out of the way.
"It was weighing on me some, and it has been for the last couple of days," Frankamp said. "I've been thinking about it a lot. Once I started playing, I got into the normal flow of the game.
"I can't even explain it, honestly; it's just a great place to be."
