BRONX, NY - The Big Strick Classic took place Saturday evening at the Gauchos Gym in the Bronx.
It's an All-Star game pitting some of New York's best H.S. talent against some of the best high schoolers from the rest of the United States. The game, which is played in honor of the late, great streetball legend John Strickland, was tight through 3 quarters, but the New York All-Stars pulled away with a big 4th quarter to take the 126-110 victory.
It was back and forth through most of the game with big men standing out for both teams. Cheick Diallo (OSNA '15) shined for the NY'ers, while Stephen Zimmerman (Bishop Gorman, NV '15) was equally as impressive for Team USA. Both were versatile and aggressive around the rim and kept their teams in the game.
It was tied at 76 heading into the final quarter when the New York team took control behind the play of Isaiah Briscoe (Roselle Catholic, NJ '15).
Briscoe showed impressive distribution skills, throwing up alley oops to Chris McCullough (Brewster Academy, NH '14) and Terry Larrier (Phelps School, PA '14). He also was a wizard with the ball in his hands, as the MC referred to him over and over as "Must See TV". He really got the crowd alive with his flashy play and ability to hit step back threes, leading the NY team on a critical 12-0 run early in the 4th to really pull away.
Diallo led all scorers with 23 points and 12 rebounds in hr game, doing a great job of controlling the paint for New York. McCullough had 19 points, Isaiah Whitehead (Abraham Lincoln '14) had 15, and Briscoe, who was the master in the 4th had 11 points and 9 assists.
