November 8, 2005An amazing season continues for Louisville defensive end Elvis Dumervil. A 6-foot, 256-pound senior defensive end for the No. 23-ranked Cardinals, Dumervil leads the nation in sacks, forced fumbles and tackles for a loss.
Despite an offensive blocking scheme specifically designed to stop him, Dumervil registered a sack and a forced fumble late in the game against Pittsburgh Thursday, setting a new NCAA Record for forced fumbles in a season (9).
"I want to thank God for that. It's a great honor," Dumervil said of his forced fumbles record. "I just want to play football and things happen. It's a good deal."
A good deal is an understatement. The forced fumbles record is already Dumervil's third NCAA record this season:
And the senior from Miami, Fla. is just four sacks away from the all-time NCAA sack record of 24 by Arizona State's Terrell Suggs. With four games left to play and just four sacks away, Dumervil said is is getting harder not to think about the record.
"It's good to get records. It makes you work harder," Dumervil said. "It makes me work harder. When it comes down to it, its really about that 'W'. I just really want to win out. That would be a great deal to me."
Louisville will line-up against Rutgers Friday night on ESPN2 with kickoff scheduled for 8 p.m. EST. Dumervil is a senior All-American Candidate and a Lombardi Award Semifinalist.
