July 31, 2007Despite a late push from Penn State, and an on-going recruitment by in-state rival Virginia, Virginia Tech today received a verbal commitment from Smithfield running back Dyrell Roberts.
Roberts, who has been a fan of and developed a friendship with Tyrod Taylor, Virginia Tech's incoming quarterback prospect from Hampton, wanted to stay close to home according to Smithfield football coach Chris Frasier, who added "his parents said that they want to see him play in college."
At 6-foot-2, and 190 pounds, Roberts may be moved to wide receiver by the Hokies or continue to play running back, one of his many positions in high school. In addition to his running back duties, Roberts has caught passes, played defensive back, returned kicks and punts for Frasier at Smithfield.
"Some schools recruited him as a running back" Frasier said, "but I just think he's a prototypical receiver. He's got really good speed, great hands, and the ability to get open."
Roberts has been rated the #14 prospect in the state by Rivals.com and the #8 prospect in the state by VirginiaPreps.com.
