The SEC and Big 12 dominated the 2008 college football season. A look at the post-spring practice Rivals.com College Football Power Rankings indicates we could be in for more of the same this year.
The SEC has six representatives atop the power rankings, which measure the nation's top players and coaches at each position. The Big 12 is close behind with five guys atop their respective positions. California running back Jahvid Best is the only person from outside the SEC or Big 12 to rank first at his position.
Defending national champion Florida leads the way with four No. 1 selections in the power rankings.
Florida's Tim Tebow beat out reigning Heisman winner Sam Bradford of Oklahoma for the top spot in the quarterback rankings, while Florida's Brandon Spikes paces the linebacker rankings. Florida's status as defending national champions also helped Urban Meyer top the coach rankings and enabled Charlie Strong to lead the way in the defensive coordinator rankings.
Florida won the national title with a 24-14 victory over Oklahoma, which has three representatives atop the power rankings. Oklahoma's Jermaine Gresham exited spring practice as the nation's No. 1 tight end, while teammate Gerald McCoy topped the defensive line rankings. Oklahoma's record-setting scoring production in 2008 allowed Kevin Wilson to exit spring practice as the nation's No. 1 offensive coordinator.
Oklahoma State has two players topping the power rankings: Dez Bryant at wide receiver and Russell Okung on the offensive line. Tennessee's Eric Berry ranks as the nation's No. 1 defensive back, while Alabama punt returner Javier Arenas is the top special teams performer.
The next edition of the power rankings will come out in August. We then will update the power rankings every Tuesday after the season kicks off.
The rating of a player and coach can fluctuate each week during the season depending on how they fared the previous week. The power rankings measure overall career performances as well as their most recent results.
