Scouting Reports

The good: He combines fine size, speed, quickness, agility and toughness. Griffin will become a top-flight pro starting safety with some play recognition improvement. He can make plays outside the hashes and has the burst of speed to close on fast receivers if his initial read is correct. In time, he will be able to play either safety spot but is best suited as the eighth man in the box, taking advantage of his strength and technique to play off blockers and make the key stop. He matches up well in coverage and can cover slot receivers.

The bad: His instincts have been questioned because he has a tendency to take a false step and put himself out of position, especially on early downs. He has the frame to play at 210 pounds, and bulking up should help him improve his tackling technique, and decrease some baffling inconsistency in that critical area. He takes erratic angles to the ball that puts out of position and causes too many missed and sloppy tackles. He is not afraid to hit and will come up and support the run well but his response to play-action needs to be improved. His footwork and hip flexibility is only average.

Outlook: Tough, aggressive strong safety with the package to start early in his career if he settles into the right system. Griffin is a playmaker and a top-30 prospect on our board, but he may go a little later. He has the physical talents to be an every-down performer and possible Pro Bowl performer with some development work. Clubs like the Bears, Patriots and Chargers very interested in the end of the first round, but he may fall into the second round.
