Recruiting Notebook

With the Eagles' first junior day well behind us where does Boston College stand with many of their top targets from the Class of 2013? Do the Eagles have a shot with any of the prospects that have recently received offers? We tackle those questions and more in this Recruiting Notebook.

Holding steady with local talent

If Boston College is going to have the kind of class that the program needs this year it's got to start at home. We all know the names: John Montelus, Tevin Montgomery and Maurice Hurst Jr. among others.

So what's the latest on those guys?

Let's start off with Hurst. We reported that the Xaverian defensive tackle picked up an offer from Nebraska this week. Needless to say he was excited by the development but he also sounded skeptical about whether he would ever visit Lincoln. He wants to but he also doesn't want to let his recruitment drag out too long and the Big Ten school is a long way from here.

If you're worried about BC's standing with Hurst (and we don't think you should be at this point) then keep an eye on Penn State. He grew up watching the Lions and while they haven't offered they are showing interest. Bill O'Brien's program has a lot of recruiting momentum right now and Hurst is talking about a trip to Happy Valley with Montgomery. The two have spoken about attending college together but that's not a done deal yet.

In short, BC is the clear leader for Hurst right now. Many fans are going to take the "I'll believe it when I see it" position and that's understandable, but all signs point to Hurst landing in Chestnut Hill.

That's exactly where Montgomery stands, too. He's not going to have the same kind of offer list that Hurst will finish with but his list could grow. We still have him pegged as a strong Eagle lean.

Montelus is tougher to call. The four-star prospect is the state's top talent with offers from Florida, Michigan and Ohio State, and it's going to take a lot of work to keep him at home. If BC gets the ball rolling with a couple of other commitments it could help to swing momentum back in the Eagles' favor here. Where does Montelus stand now? He knows basically all he needs to know about Boston College and is in fact-finding mode when it comes to other schools.

The Rivals250 lineman should have a list of favorites by the summer and we would be shocked if the Eagles are not on it. That's as far as we'll go for now.

New offers going out

EagleAction.com reported on Garden State wide receiver Charlie Callinan this week and everything we're hearing sounds good.

In fact, one source told us this week that Boston College may even be the front runner and the favorite to land Callinan ... if he doesn't pick up any offers that carry weight nationwide.

The big news on Thursday was the offer that was sent out to Jack McDonald, the offensive guard from Boston College High.

We spoke with McDonald shortly after that news broke and he was thrilled, to say the least. He repeatedly emphasized how nice it was to have an offer from a local school he's so familiar with and we believe the Eagles are the current front runner.

Maryland has also offered McDonald and he will be visiting Duke and Maryland in the next month.

McDonald is very close with Hurst and we could definitely see that as something else that works in BC's favor, especially if one of the two commits early.

Of course, the Eagles also recently sent an offer out to Minnesota linebacker Jack Cottrell. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound prospect raved about BC's linebacker tradition after visiting the school earlier this year. There's another kid to keep an eye on and someone BC fans should feel good about.

Still strong with Taylor

Ryan Day had been responsible for recruiting Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) University School wide receiver Dionte Taylor and he was doing a great job of selling the school. In fact, BC was Taylor's leader. Day's departure created a bit of uncertainty and while Taylor reiterated that he was interested in the school more than Day he wanted to hear what the new assistants had to say.

This week the Eagles reached out to Taylor and everything is still looking good. Taylor won't name a clear cut favorite but he did say that the Eagles are "up near the very top" of his list.

It looks like Sean Desai, BC's new running backs coach and special teams coordinator, will handle the recruiting duties from here on out. He spoke with Taylor and let him know that he's still a very high priority for BC. Taylor is hoping to visit sometime this spring.

The latest on Rettig

Fresh off a visit to Auburn, four-star quarterback Hayden Rettig is singing the Tigers' praises. He's got nothing but good things to say about the SEC school and they've moved into serious contention. Last year Auburn proved they could woo a top-flight quarterback from outside the state when they snagged Zeke Pike from Kentucky.

BC isn't going to give up on Rettig anytime soon. His brother's presence in Chestnut Hill gives the Eagles an advantage that other schools simply don't have. However, he always seem to note that Pac 12 schools are working extremely hard to keep him at home.

This one is still too tough to call but the Eagles are still in the running.

Overview

Andrew Isaacs remains the only commitment but there are plenty of reasons to be upbeat. Over the past month a lot of recruits have spoken very highly of BC. If one or two guys commit it could get the ball rolling. Here's a list of guys that we feel the Eagles are sitting very strong with.

QB Hayden Rettig
RB Godwin Igwebuike
WR Charlie Callinan
WR Kyle Queiro
WR Ricky Jeune
WR Daryl Worley
TE Nathan Marcus
OL Moise Larose
OL Mike McGlinchey
OL John Montelus
OL Jack McDonald
OL Brad Henson
DE Shakir Soto
DT Tevin Montgomery
DT Darius Commissiong
DT Maurice Hurst Jr.
LB Jack Cottrell
CB Adrian Baker
ATH Lemond Johnson
ATH Kyle Queiro
ATH Delton Williams

The list above is impressive simply because we're only listing players that we believe BC either leads for or players that would have the Eagles near the top of their list.
