Corunna junior lineman gets Spartan offer

It looks like the in-state class of 2011 will be especially good in the trenches. This weekend Michigan State hosted an impressive group of prospects for a Junior Day, including 6-foot-7, 290-pound offensive tackle prospect Jalen Schlachter of Corunna High School. While in East Lansing, Schlachter got some very good news.

"I got a scholarship offer," Schlachter said. "They (Michigan State) told me they want me to be a part of the Spartan family. I also got an offer from Wisconsin on Thursday. I really can see myself being a good fit at Michigan State."

Michigan State has long had Schlachter as a prospect they are interested in. Schlachter camped at Michigan State last summer and Spartan Offensive Line Coach Dan Roushar is handling the recruitment of Schlachter himself. The rapport that Coach Roushar has built up with Schlachter the last year is a positive factor in his recruitment.

"I really like Coach Roushar," Schlachter stated. "I also like Coach Ken Mannie too. I love the campus at Michigan State. I like the Skandalaris Building and how everything is in one location; the weight room, the locker room and the academic center are all right there."

Schlachter has been to Michigan State before, but this time he was able to really get a good understanding about the program and the environment.

"The campus had a lot of excitement to it and I really like how Coach Dantonio stated how they will give us an opportunity, but the rest we have to earn," Schlachter said.

The last few years Coach Dantonio has landed a high-level in-state commitment to get the upcoming recruiting class started off on the right foot. Last year it was All-American linebacker Max Bullough. The year before, it was SpartanMag.com's #1 prospect for 2009 Chris Norman. Could Schlachter be this year's first commitment? If he does decide to join the Green and White, it will give Michigan State an impressive building block for 2011.
