Redshirt Reviews: Gaines and Jackson
With spring camp right around the corner, Duck Sports Authority sat down with offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich to discuss some of the players coming off their redshirt year. For the wide receiver group that includes 6-foot-2, 205 pound freshman Diante Jackson, and hopefully, 6-foot-3, 210 pound Tyrece Gaines.
Watching the two practice on the scout offense last season was confusing. Without jersey numbers, both players appear to be clones with similar size, style and billowing dreadlocks. Coach Helfrich identified at least one difference.
"Tyrece has a little more shake," assessed Helfrich. "Diante has a little more straight-away speed I would say. Both have the ability to go up and get the ball which is something everybody needs. If they get on the field at the same time it could be a very good situation."
While basically the entire wide receiver group from 2009 returns, the Oregon staff saw enough from the two to look forward to the next step in their careers.
"Both Tyrece Gaines and Diante Jackson are guys we expect big things out of," Helfrich began. "They are both growing into being college football players and full time college students and everything that goes with that, but every day there was something to ooh and ah about, something that Tyrece did or Diante did. We need them to grow into being big, dynamic and fast guys. Those guys are what you want physically and now they just need to develop on the field. They can both be huge threats for us."
