Thomas talks 5-Star status

For the second straight year Mark Dantonio and the Michigan State Spartans have landed the top defensive prospect in the Midwest. SpartanMag.com caught up with the latest 5-star recruit for the Green and White and got the latest.

With the unveiling of the Rivals.com 100, Michigan State became the only Big Ten School to have consecutive 5-star recruits. Linebacker Lawrence Thomas of Detroit Renaissance High School joins 2010 defensive end commitment William Gholston as 5-star Spartans.

Thomas, who committed to Michigan State back in March, is rated the #11 player in the nation and the top player in Michigan for the class of 2011. SpartanMag.com asked Thomas what it felt like to be considered one of the very best recruits in the nation.

"It's wonderful being named a 5-star recruit," Thomas stated. "By me being a 5-star recruit it just goes to show that all the hard work I put in has really paid off."

The 6-foot-4,240-pound Thomas has been busy this spring working out for his upcoming season. SpartanMag.com asked him what his plans are for the summer?

"My plans for this summer are to basically get my team in tip-top shape and ready for this season. I'm not doing anymore camps except the Michigan State camp this summer."

Despite his verbal commitment to Michigan State, numerous teams continue to try and get him to open his recruitment back-up. However, Thomas remains solidly committed to the Spartans and is looking forward to joining a defense that will include players like Gholston, Max Bullough, Mylan Hicks, Blake Treadwell and Chris Norman. The collection of high-level defensive prospects the coaching staff is assembling is impressive.

Thomas has been very active on the recruiting front. As SpartanMag.com has reported before, Thomas has a good relationship with several other top recruits including Saginaw wide receiver DeAnthony Arnett. Teh two keep in frequent contact. Arnett was rated the 49th best player in the nation buy Rivals.com and the 4th best wide receiver.

Arnett is hoping to follow the similar path set by Gholston last fall. Teh Detroit Southeastern product had to prove himself worthy of 5-star status by tearing up the post-season circuit. Arnett is looking forward toward doing the same.

Arnett's brother Ralph had the following to about the unveiling of the Rivals 100:

"It is great to be in the top 50. It would be nice to be higher, but DeAnthony will just have to go out and show everyone that he is the best wide receiver out there. He enjoys the competition and will just have to go to the All-American game and prove it. It is great for him to be recognized for all of his hard work."

Arnett loves to compete, last year he attended both Michiagn State Camp sessions even after he was offered just because he wanted the opportunity to go up against defensive backs like Dior Mathis, Mylan Hicks and Doran Grants.

SpartanMag.com will have more on the recruiting rankings later today as the Rivals 250 will be released this afternoon.
