Jersey stud Calhoun would be interested
Shilique Calhoun doesn't know too much about UConn but you can chalk that up to the fact that he hasn't devoted as much attention to the recruiting process as some other prospects. His coach is also handling a lot of the details.
In spite of that, and in spite of the fact that the Huskies have not offered a scholarship to the 6-foot-5, 225-pound prospect from New Jersey, Calhoun said UConn is a school he would be interested in. The Huskies have shown some interest in the past, but Calhoun isn't exactly sure just how interested they are yet.
"I think UConn is recruiting me," he explained. "I haven't really spoken with anyone there much, though. That's the only thing. I haven't had a real conversation with anyone on that staff but I know they had shown some interest.
"You can't count anyone out because it might be the best school for you. I'm just looking for the best fit and basically doing what my mom says. She checks everything out and she's gonna make sure I'll be alright. She'll be a big factor."
When mom is a factor in the recruiting process then location usually is too, and that's something that could work in UConn's favor if they decide to offer down the road. Though Calhoun doesn't have any favorites, location is certainly one reason why he will pay a lot of attention to Rutgers and some of the other schools in the Big East, almost all of whom have offered, other than Connecticut.
"I think I'm gonna take a couple of official visits because I don't want to move too fast," he explained. "I think I'll maybe take three official visits then (decide) after that. I'm trying to make a decision during the season.
"For now it's pretty open. Basically I'm interest in all (the schools recruiting him) equally."
Calhoun said all of the schools that have contacted him are recruiting him as a defensive end.
