Elflein a big target
Already holding verbal offers from Bowling Green and Toledo, Pat Elflein has emerged as one of Ohio's top offensive line prospects in the recruiting class of 2012.
The 6-foot-3, 260-pound two-way lineman from Pickerington North has drawn interest from many of the Midwest's top programs including Ohio State, Notre Dame, Michigan State, Pittsburgh, Tennessee and Cincinnati.
Elflein visited many of those schools this fall.
"I was at Ohio State for the Miami game and the (Ohio) game," Elflein said. "(The Miami game) was crazy. The whole game was loud and all the fans were going crazy. I loved it."
This wasn't Elflein's first year visiting Columbus. He was there as a freshman and prior to the 2010 season he attended the Buckeyes' football camp and attended the Nike Camp on campus. He was named a top performer at both camps.
Elflein said he received positive feedback from the Ohio State coaching staff.
"They want me to come to camp again and they got my film so I guess we will find at camp over the summer," he said.
He visited Notre Dame when the Irish hosted Pittsburgh.
"They invited me to a game and I've been receiving mail from them," Elflein said of the Irish. "It was a very exciting atmosphere and they have a great tradition. I like that."
A two-way starter since his freshman season, Elflein said most schools are recruiting him to play offensive guard.
This year he helped North to a 6-4 season, despite the Panthers suffering through several key injuries and a brutal schedule.
As a junior, he recorded 57 tackles and three sacks.
"Coaches always compliment me on my (physicality) and that I always play to the whistle," he said.
Elflein carries that intensity over to the wrestling mat where he hopes to earn a spot in the 2011 state wrestling tournament.
Last weekend he finished in fourth place at the 26th Annual Solon Comet Classic, one of the toughest season opening tournaments in the state.
Despite his ability on the mat, Elflein said he'd probably stick to football in college.
