By most standard, Thomson's John Atkins is a late-comer to the 2012 recruiting scene, but the 6-foot-4, 310-pounder is starting to turn some heads as evidenced by his offer from Georgia Saturday afternoon.
"It was a great visit," said Atkins, who met with head coach Mark Richt, defensive line coach Rodney Garner and defensive coordinator Todd Grantham during his first trip to Athens.
Richt made the offer to Atkins his is Butts-Mehre office Saturday. Atkins plays both ways for the Thomson Bulldogs, but said he is being recruited as a defensive linemen by Georgia.
"I really want to go to Georgia," Atkins said during a telephone interview with UGASports. "But I didn't commit yet."
Whatever Atkins eventually decides, the Bulldogs are getting in on the two-way standout at an early stage.
The Georgia offer was just the second for Atkins after he received one recently from Massachusetts, although he has upcoming visits scheduled for Alabama and Florida. He said he has also heard from Georgia Tech, Ball State and Middle Tennessee.
Although Atkins wasn't certain when his other visits might take place, he plans on getting back to Athens very soon.
"Probably this next weekend," said Atkins, who also plays on his high school soccer team. "Yes sir."
Atkins said he will likely visit Alabama this weekend as well.
"My coach tells me not to bite at the first offer," said Atkins, who is expecting an offer from the Crimson Tide. "Wherever I commit, he just wants me to make sure it's where I want to go."
