Notebook: Joke is on Means
Ikeem Means is an admitted prankster, but Monday night the tables were turned.
Means, a junior defensive back from Wetumpka, was one of eight walk-ons to earn a scholarship. It was a big moment for him. It was a big moment for his family.
And he had a plan to inform them, but his plan didn't include informing them of the scholarship.
"I was going to call my mom and tell her I didn't get it, that maybe next year I will," said Means.
But Means' mother was already one step ahead of him. Following Monday night's team meeting where Means learned of his offer, he went home to his apartment. He was prepared to make the call to his mother, but there wasn't a need.
"I got home and about 20 family members just popped out and surprised me with cake and everything," said Means. "They knew before me. I was going to surprise them, but they were at my apartment and surprised me."
It was the second time Means had been surprised that night. The first came earlier when he found out the news of the scholarship.
"I had no idea," he said. "I stopped breathing for a little while when my name was called. It was like a dream come true."...
