N.Y. running back likes Purdue

Running back Augustus Edwards likes those who like him.

And at this point, the teams showing the Staten Island native the most interest are Maryland, Purdue, Syracuse and West Virginia, the last of which has not yet offered.

"I'm examining things," said Edwards, who has more than a dozen offers. "But right now there are a couple schools who I like that are showing the most interest."

Edwards, however, probably isn't close to making a decision. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound back, a three-star prospect, has been able to visit only school in the Northeast thus far, hitting Syracuse, Rutgers and UConn.

But he'd like to get elsewhere, and could have to wait until taking official visits in the fall.

"I plan to get there if I can," he said of West Lafayette. "Right now it looks like Purdue would be a school I'd like to visit for an official."

Edwards' knowledge of Purdue is cursory, knowing only that it's a Big Ten school in Indiana where "Drew Brees went," but he's learning more and more as the Boilermakers recruit him.

"I don't know much more than what the coaches tell me," he said. "But they've been recruiting me very hard, showing me a lot of interest."

As a junior at Tottenville High School, Edwards ran for 1,411 yards and 11 touchdowns, with a TD reception and two kickoff returns for scores.

He's got some criteria in choosing a school.

"Right now, I'm at a point where I want to play early and be surrounded by a great environment," he said. "And education, of course, but I know all these schools will offer a great education."
