Richmond close to committing
Winston-Salem, NC - JaQuel Richmond played a significant role in High Point (NC) Wesleyan Christian Academy's 70-63 win over Quality Education Academy Tuesday, Dec. 11 at Carver High School, as he scored eight points and dished out four assists.
"I think I played good, [and] maintained the game really as a point guard," Richmond said. "I think I've improved a lot. My jump-shot is better now. I think I've improved a lot in my game."
Wesleyan head coach and former Maryland point guard Keith Gatlin said Richmond does everything he and his staff tell him to do.
"He's been leading the team," Gatlin said. "If we can just get him to make those free throws he's a complete ballplayer now."
"They [college coaches] love how he's playing, because he's playing unselfish, he's playing for the team. He's just really been a leader, which is great."
Wake Forest assistant coach Walt Corbean was in attendance.
"We [Corbean and I] talk almost every day," Richmond said. "We talk about a lot of stuff, like what would be going on if I come there. He's just basically building a relationship with me, just trying to keep in touch, let me know that they care for me and that they really want me to come there."
Wake Forest freshman forward Aaron Rountree made a cameo toward the end of the game, and sat down beside Richmond's father. Rountree went into the Wesleyan locker room after the game.
"They're [Demon Deacons] really showing much love," Richmond said. "That's what I like to see right now."
Richmond added he feels good about Wake.
The 6-foot-1 and 170-pound junior from nearby Greensboro plans to choose a school on his birthday, Wednesday, Jan. 16.
"I basically know where I'm going already," Richmond said. "I'm announcing at my house. I'm going to call the [college's] coach when I wake up in the morning [Jan. 16]."
